The Fens is an area of , hectares, stretching from Lincoln and Boston in the North, Cambridge to the South and Peterborough to the West. It includes large parts of the counties of Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire and smaller parts of Norfolk and Suffolk. Each book is self supporting, I don't feel like I've missed out listening to them out of sequence. The pace is there from the outset, the story starts developing almost instantly. I love the working relationship between Jackman and Ellis, there is no sexual chemistry, just professional and platonic respect.
in their desire to drain the Fens and would certainly come to grief if they pursued it. “We have always observed,” the writer concluded, “that no man having true knowledge of the fens did ever undertake them; neither did any undertake them but with repentance.”1 A decade later, in , another knowledgeable, anonymous commentatorAuthor: Eric H. Ash. Last time we were there, I toured Fenway Park, and the nearby Back Bay Fens from which the stadium gets its name. A fen, a word previously unknown to me, is a marsh, or any area that is swampy and covered with water. I wandered around the fens on my own one day, and found it oddly creepy. The grasses of the fens were at least 15 feet tall.
SHADOW OVER THE FENS is the second novel in a gripping new crime fiction series. The first book CRIME ON THE FENS is out now. PRAISE FOR JOY ELLIS: “Joy Ellis’s future books will be something to look forward to.” BEWARE THE PAST is a marvelous standalone modern detective mystery by British author Joy Ellis. Few novels build and maintain suspense as well as this one. There is a major plot twist that I never saw coming. Like the novel, the narration earns 5 stars. I've listened to and enjoyed all 8 novels in the Nikki Galena series by Joy Ellis.

The previous book was the first one I had read from the author, I loved it so much that I have read most of the series now. I eagerly anticipated this, the next in the series. It was well worth the wait. This could be the best yet, of an already fantastic series.
There has been so much development out on the Fens since the last book/5. It was a landscape in which the Romans saw many opportunities; the large areas of dry wooded land, the fertile soil and the well-stocked lakes along with the beds of reed and alder, which could be harvested and used.
The Fens were worth the time and effort it would take to claim them, or so the Romans thought. The Fens, or Fenland(s), are a naturally marshy region in eastern England.
Most of the fens were drained several centuries ago. They are now mostly a flat, damp, low-lying agricultural region. A fen is an individual area of marshland or former marshland. The marsh is (or was) neutral or alkaline water with relatively large quantities of dissolved minerals, but few other plant nutrients.

CHAPTER II Enter Tod of the Fens "GOOD MORROW!" said a tall man, stepping out of the wayside bushes and addressing a beggar who came along a rough path that ran beside the Lindis River."Art thou on thy way to Boston?" "Ay," was the surly answer, and the beggar turned aside to adjust a patch over one eye, for he was taken unawares, and had been enjoying the sight of the eye that needs must be.
Enjoyed the ongoing character building & imagery of the Fens as book 2 of the series progressed. The evolving mystery of who "did it" grabbed my undivided attention as the pages turned towards the finishing chapter. Would have preferred less of the colourful language, but understand this was part of the character building/5().

Life on The Edge of the Fens. likes. Who hasn't dreamt of doing it. Making 'The Big Move'. Casting off the grime and dirt of city life for fields and space.
This is our story5/5(6). As it is, the book ends too early in the seventeenth century, and there is a feeling that it peters out, with too many questions left unresolved. Having made large claims for the role of the Fens in state building, the book does not end with them. This is a line of argument that needs a more conclusive statement before it can be : R.

Lyra in the Fens The first excerpt from The Secret Commonwealth, the next book in Philip Pullman’s trilogy The Book of Dust. Captive on the Fens by Joy Ellis, where I got to spend time with one of my favourite detectives, Nikki Galena.
This is her fifth outing (and the third book I’ve read) and it was a good one as Nikki is on the trail of a serial kidnapper. "saw them as solid globes of crystal; enclosing a round ball of earth and air, in which tiny men and women labored, as beneath the dome of the sky itself." But Joan must prepare for marriage, which means the loss of childhood's fairyland, represented by the fens, and instead assume the adult mantle of colonization, possession, domination of one.
Perhaps because I've been looking for an excuse to read the book again, I began to imagine that this countryside was part of the Fens - the flat.
There are, of course, wonderful things to see in this strange, sometimes spooky place. Ely Cathedral, the octagon of which once served as a lighthouse to guide travellers across the Fens, still makes the heart lift with feelings akin to relief, even to car drivers: silhouetted against the sky, its great but delicately shaped bulk promises civilisation and tea at The Old Fire Engine House.Fire on the Fens by Joy Ellis, the latest in Ellis' Nikki Galena series will comfort you with the return of Nikki, Joseph, and their team and unsettle you with their most recent case.
Retired fire inspector John Carson has been following several small fires that he suspects is an arsonist learning his craft. Something about these fires makes him suspect that the arsonist has a much bigger plan.
